Kum. Sophia Salingaros

 

Born in San Antonio, Texas, Sophia studied Bharatanatyam with Guru Dr. Sreedhara Akkihebbalu from the age of nine. Since her debut recital – ‘Arangetram’ - in 2010, she has given numerous solo performances in the US and abroad. She is an ICCR Empaneled Artist, a 2013 Young Arts Finalist, and a 2017-2018 IndianRaga Fellow. In 2018, she was invited by the UAE Prime Minister to perform at the World Government Summit in Dubai for Indian Prime Minister Modi. Sophia also studies intensively with Rama Vaidyanathan in Delhi, and performed in her 2018 US and India tour of ‘Vivartana’. Also a pre-professional ballet dancer, Sophia studied at the Bolshoi Ballet Academy in Moscow for six weeks under full scholarship in 2015. She is currently studying chemistry Columbia University, and passionately continues her pursuit of dance.

Dr. Sridara Akkihebbalu

 

Dr Sreedhara Akkihebbalu has medical, arts and yoga background. Trained as a physician, he is also a widely performed Bharathanatyam dancer, choreographer and teacher. He has been a student of H S Arun, an Iyengar style teacher for 28 years. He has also attended classed at Ramamani Iyengar Institute of Yoga in Pune and has taken classes under BKS Iyengar, Geetha Iyengar and Prashant Iyengar. He did courses in yoga and yoga therapy from SVYASA, Bengaluru. He is a certified Yoga Therapise with IAYT. He is the co-founder of first Yoga teacher training school in San Antonio, Esther Vexler Yoga School. He teaches many groups including seniors and DIVAs and DUDEs.

Reminisce with them as they evoke their love through language, music, and dance. Come let your heart experience emotion in a whole new light. Written and Directed by Shyama Iyer and originally presented in Western Kentucky University's Studio Series.
